A new baby is one of life’s biggest milestones, but deciding what to send can be surprisingly difficult. Do you buy something practical for the newborn? Something lovely for Mum? Something the parents can share? Or skip the traditional baby hamper altogether and give something that will last?
The best new baby gift boxes don’t necessarily contain the most baby products. A thoughtful gift can celebrate the whole family, combining something useful or cuddly for the new arrival with a well-deserved treat for the parents.
At About Giving, we’ve been creating and delivering gifts throughout New Zealand for over 40 years, and new baby hampers are one of the occasions we love designing.
Here’s what we’d put in one along with a few new baby gift ideas if you’re looking for something a little different.
A simple formula is:
Something for baby + something for the parents.
You certainly don’t have to follow that rule, but it’s a great place to start if you’re building a gift yourself.
For baby, practical items such as a swaddle or merino socks work beautifully alongside something soft and cuddly.
Then remember the people currently running on very little sleep.
Chocolate, tea, gourmet food or a pampering product gives Mum and Dad something that’s actually for them.
The result feels like a celebration of the new arrival without forgetting the people doing all the work.
We particularly like baby gifts that are either useful, comforting or likely to stick around beyond the first few weeks.
Three of our favourites are:
There’s a reason these remain such a popular new baby gift.
A beautiful soft toy is suitable from the very beginning and may eventually become one of those much-loved childhood companions that goes everywhere.
Our current Create Your Own range includes plenty of different animals and characters, so you don’t need to choose according to whether the baby is a boy or girl.
A cotton muslin swaddle is practical, lightweight and something new parents can genuinely use.
It’s also an easy addition to a gift box because it pairs naturally with toys, clothing and treats for the parents.
For a New Zealand baby, it’s hard to go past merino.
Baby socks are practical without requiring you to guess too much about sizing, and they’re particularly lovely for keeping little feet warm during the cooler months.
Our Welcome Baby gift uses exactly this approach, combining a cuddly toy, merino baby socks and a muslin wrap.
When a baby arrives, understandably, the baby receives a lot of attention.
The parents could probably use a little attention too.
Rather than making every item in the hamper baby-related, consider adding something they can enjoy.
That could be:
Pampering products work particularly well because they’re useful while still feeling special. A lovely hand cream or body lotion isn’t another piece of clutter — it’s something that will actually get used.
Food is another easy win. New parents have plenty going on, and having something delicious within reach is rarely unwelcome.
We’d lean towards both parents wherever possible.
You can absolutely include something particularly lovely for Mum, especially after everything she’s just been through. But the gift doesn’t need to be heavily gendered.
A selection of gourmet food, chocolate, tea and other treats can be enjoyed by whoever is at home navigating those early newborn days.
It’s also a nice approach when you don’t know the family particularly well.
Instead of trying to guess what Mum or Dad individually likes, send something the household can enjoy together.
This one requires a little judgement.
Champagne and new arrivals have traditionally gone hand in hand — and people certainly still send wine and bubbles to celebrate a birth. About Giving’s current baby range includes celebratory options such as Bubs & Bubbles and Champagne & Cuddles.
However, alcohol isn’t an automatic inclusion in a new baby gift anymore.
If you know the parents would enjoy it, a bottle of Champagne or wine can be a lovely way to say congratulations.
If you’re unsure, leave it out.
There’s no shortage of beautiful food, tea, chocolate and pampering products that can make a new baby hamper feel generous without alcohol.
You don’t need to know.
New baby gifts don’t have to be pink or blue.
Soft toys, neutral swaddles, merino socks, wooden toys, books and other practical baby products can work beautifully for any new arrival.
In fact, choosing gender-neutral products can be particularly useful if you’re sending the gift before you’ve heard all the details or you’re buying for parents who prefer a more neutral approach.
This is where we’d change the formula a little.
By baby number two or three, the family may already have drawers full of baby clothes, toys and equipment.
So don’t feel you need to send more of the same.
A foodie care package for the whole family can be fantastic.
Think gourmet snacks, biscuits, chocolate, tea and easy treats for Mum and Dad — and if there are older children in the family, don’t forget them.
Adding something small such as Smarties or Jet Planes for the new big brother or sister is an easy way to make them feel included too.
Then perhaps add one special item specifically for the new baby, such as a cuddly toy.
A hamper isn’t your only option.
For a milestone as significant as the arrival of a child, one of our favourite alternatives is a living tree gift.
A baby will quickly outgrow clothes, blankets and toys.
A tree is different.
It can grow alongside the child and become part of the family’s story — particularly if it’s eventually planted in their garden.
You can also choose a tree that reflects the season in which the baby arrived.
For a winter baby, a flowering camellia or mānuka can be a beautiful choice.
For a summer arrival, consider a citrus tree.
And if the baby arrives in spring when the kōwhai is flowering, a kōwhai can create a lovely connection between their birth and the season.
Rather than assigning a made-up “birth meaning” to every variety, choose something that has a genuine connection to the time, place or family.
If you’d like to understand the different varieties before choosing, our Tree Gift NZ – How to Choose the Right One guide explores individual trees and their meanings in more detail.
You can also combine the two ideas. About Giving’s Tree & Friend pairs a living baby tree with a cuddly toy, creating something for now and something that can continue growing for years to come.
Again, think beyond baby equipment.
If the parents already have everything they need, consumables are your friend.
Send beautiful food they’ll eat, pampering products they’ll use or something meaningful such as a living tree.
You don’t have to find an ingenious baby gadget they’ve somehow never encountered before.
Sometimes the best gift is simply something that makes those first few exhausting weeks a little nicer.
There isn’t a correct amount.
The relationship matters far more than an arbitrary gifting rule.
A colleague might send a small but thoughtful gift. Grandparents may want to give something much more substantial. A group of coworkers might pool their budget for a larger hamper.
All of those are appropriate.
The gesture itself is thoughtful.
Choose a budget you’re comfortable with and focus on what you’d genuinely like the family to receive.
Absolutely.
This is particularly useful when you want to combine gifts for baby with treats for the parents.
About Giving’s Create Your Own Gift range includes a dedicated Toys & Baby selection alongside sweet, savoury, beverages, and home & beauty products. Current baby options include swaddles, merino socks and soft toys, while the wider range lets you add chocolates, gourmet food, tea and pampering products for the parents.
That means you could create something as simple as:
Cuddly toy + swaddle + chocolate
Or:
Merino socks + soft toy + hand cream + tea + gourmet treats
Or build a much larger family gift.
You decide what you’d like to spend and choose the products. We’ll work out the best way to package and present everything.
If you have absolutely no idea where to start, you don’t have to build the gift yourself.
That’s what ready-made hampers are for.
If someone called us and said, “My friend has just had a baby. What should I send?”, Pampered Beginnings would be one of our first recommendations.
It’s designed around exactly the principle we’ve talked about throughout this guide: acknowledging the new baby while including something indulgent for the parents too. Our current New Baby collection also ranges from simple baby-focused gifts through to pampering hampers, living-tree gifts and celebratory options.
And if you find a ready-made baby hamper that’s nearly perfect but want to make it bigger, you can add extra products from our Create Your Own range and we’ll package them together.
It doesn’t need to be complicated.
A warm congratulations and a few genuine words about the new arrival are enough.
If you’re close to the family, make it personal. Mention how excited you are to meet the baby, tell them they’ll make wonderful parents or simply let them know you’re thinking of them during this huge new chapter.
The message doesn’t need to be clever.
It just needs to sound like you.
If there’s one piece of advice we’d give when choosing a new baby gift, it’s to think beyond the newborn.
Something practical or cuddly for baby is lovely.
Something delicious or indulgent for Mum and Dad says, we’re thinking of you too.
Something for an older sibling can make them feel included.
And something lasting, such as a living tree, can mark the significance of the occasion in a completely different way.
That’s what makes new baby gifting so much fun — there isn’t one correct gift.
So, what should you put in a new baby gift box?
Start with something useful or cuddly for baby. Add something the parents can enjoy. Include older siblings if there are any. And don’t be afraid to think outside the traditional hamper altogether.
At About Giving, you can choose from our ready-made New Baby Gifts, build your own baby hamper through Create Your Own, or celebrate the arrival with a living tree that can grow alongside the child.
Whether it’s three carefully chosen items or a generous gift for the whole family, the most important part is simple:
You’re celebrating a very special new arrival.
